Tide review: plans and fees
Tide has four plans. All of them include a business account, a Mastercard debit card and access to the Instant Saver. The main differences are how many bank transfers are included, foreign-exchange fees on card payments, and extra features.
| Plan | Monthly price | Bank transfers | Card payments abroad | Instant Saver rate after intro period | Notable extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | £0 | 5 a month | 2.75% FX fee | 1.5% AER | 3 invoices a month, Payment Links, Tap to Pay |
| Smart | £12.49 | 30 a month | 0% FX fee | 2.5% AER | Second current account, team card, 2 CHAPS payments, Xero connector |
| Pro | £27.49 | Unlimited | 0% FX fee | 3% AER | Tide Accounting, 2 team cards |
| Max | £69.99 | Unlimited | 0% FX fee | 3.25% AER | 0.5% cashback, payroll software, unlimited invoicing |
Savings rates are variable and change with the Bank of England base rate. Tide's pricing page doesn't say whether plan prices include VAT, and it doesn't list every per-transaction charge, such as cash deposits, so check Tide's full pricing against how you'll use the account.
Which plan? If you make five or fewer bank transfers a month and rarely pay in foreign currency, the Free plan is likely enough. If you regularly make more transfers, compare the cost of Smart with what you'd pay elsewhere. You can claim the STARTUP200 cashback on any plan, including Free.
Tide review: features
- Business account and card: UK card payments, Direct Debits, ATM withdrawals, and cash and cheque deposits on every plan.
- Getting paid: invoicing (3 a month on Free), Payment Links, Tap to Pay on your phone and an optional card reader.
- Bookkeeping: integrations with third-party accounting software and Making Tax Digital tools on all plans. Tide Accounting comes with Pro and Max.
- Savings: the Instant Saver and a Tax Saver for setting money aside.
- Company admin: limited company registration, a company secretary service and confirmation statement filing.
- Credit: Tide offers access to business loans and other finance from a panel of lenders. Borrowing is subject to status.
Tide review: is Tide safe?
Tide is not a bank. Tide Platform Ltd is authorised by the FCA under the Electronic Money Regulations 2011. Tide says its current and savings accounts are powered by ClearBank Ltd, a bank authorised by the PRA and regulated by the FCA and PRA. Eligible deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) up to £120,000 per depositor, across all accounts held with ClearBank.
Some older Tide accounts are e-money accounts with PrePay Technologies Ltd. Money in those is safeguarded, which protects it if that firm becomes insolvent, but it isn't covered by the FSCS. Check which applies to you in the Tide app.
If you hold large balances, remember the £120,000 limit applies across everything you hold with ClearBank, which provides accounts for other brands too.
Tide reviews from customers
On 25 October 2026, Tide's Trustpilot page showed a score of 4.4 out of 5 from 38,882 reviews, with 75% rating it 5 stars and 16% rating it 1 star. Reading recent reviews, positive comments most often mention helpful staff, quick account set-up and an easy-to-use app. Negative reviews most often mention slow replies from support, difficulty reaching a person through automated chat, and accounts being restricted during checks.
That pattern is common for app-only accounts: most people have a smooth experience, and the ones who don't are usually waiting on support. If your business can't cope with a short delay to access, consider keeping a second business account as a backup.
Tide review: verdict by type of business
| Business | Our Tide review verdict |
|---|---|
| New sole trader or freelancer | Good fit. No monthly fee, invoicing included, and the £75 part of STARTUP200 is easy to reach*. |
| New limited company | Good fit, especially if you register the company with Tide for £14.99 at the same time. |
| Business making many payments | Consider a paid plan or an account with free UK transfers. Free includes 5 transfers a month. |
| Business paying abroad by card | Free charges 2.75% on foreign-currency card payments; Smart and above don't. |
| Cash-heavy business | Cash deposits are available, but check Tide's tariff for the per-deposit charge first. |
| Business that needs a branch | Not a fit. Tide is app-based. |
Tide review: opening an account
For this Tide review we followed Tide's published process rather than claim a timed test. You apply in the Tide app or on Tide's website, enter a code if you have one, verify your identity with photo ID and a selfie, and confirm your business details. Sole traders need a UK home address and HMRC registration; limited company directors can live in the UK or overseas, with the company registered at Companies House. Tide doesn't publish a guaranteed opening time, so allow a few days before any deadline that matters.
Tide review: the app and card
Everything happens in the Tide app: payments, invoices, receipts, team access and savings. Each plan includes a Mastercard business debit card, and you can take card payments on your phone with Tap to Pay or with Tide's card reader. In our Tide review, the strongest everyday features for small businesses are the built-in invoicing, Payment Links and the Making Tax Digital tools, which help sole traders keep records ready for HMRC.
Tide review: how Tide compares with other business accounts
A Tide review is only useful next to the alternatives. Here's how Tide's entry-level account compares with other accounts we track, using each provider's own pricing on 25 October 2026:
| Account | Monthly fee (entry plan) | UK transfers | Cash deposits | Protection |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tide | £0 (Free) | 5 a month on Free | Yes (fees apply) | FSCS via ClearBank |
| Starling | £0 | Free UK transfers | Post Office, 0.7% (min £3) | FSCS (UK bank) |
| Monzo Business | £0 (Lite) | Free UK transfers | £1 per deposit | UK bank |
| Mettle | £0 | Check Mettle | Post Office, £2.75 | FSCS (NatWest) |
| Zempler Bank | £0 (Business Go) | 3 free, then 35p | Post Office, £4 min or 0.55% | FSCS (UK bank) |
| ANNA Money | £0 (Free) | Unlimited outgoing | Check ANNA | E-money, safeguarded |
Where Tide stands out in this Tide review is the combination of a no-fee plan, built-in invoicing, company registration for £14.99 and the STARTUP200 sign-up offer. Where others stand out: Starling and Monzo include free UK transfers on their free plans, and Starling holds your money directly as a bank. See the full business account comparison.
Tide review: what Tide could cost you in practice
Plan prices only tell part of the story. Three examples, using Tide's published plan prices:
- A freelancer making 3 or 4 transfers a month: the Free plan's 5 included transfers cover it, so the monthly plan cost is £0.
- A small company paying 20 suppliers a month: more than the Free plan's 5 transfers. Smart, at £12.49 a month, includes 30. Compare that with accounts that include free UK transfers.
- An online seller paying overseas suppliers by card: the Free plan charges a 2.75% fee on foreign-currency card payments. On £1,000 of foreign card spend a month, that's £27.50, more than the Smart plan's £12.49, which has no fee.
Those are worked examples, not advice. Check Tide's full pricing against your own figures.
Tide review: the Instant Saver
Tide's Instant Saver is a variable-rate, instant-access savings account for your business, with withdrawals going to your nominated account. The rate after the introductory period depends on your plan: from 1.5% AER on Free to 3.25% AER on Max, according to Tide's pricing page. Eligible deposits are FSCS-protected through ClearBank. For new members, the Instant Saver is also part of the STARTUP200 offer: hold £5,000 in it for 30 days for an extra £125*. Read the current summary box (PDF) for today's rates. *T&Cs apply
Tide review: company formation
Tide registers limited companies for a one-off £14.99, including your Certificate of Incorporation, Memorandum and Articles, share certificates, PAYE registration with HMRC and a Tide business account. A company secretary service and a London virtual office address are available at extra cost. In this Tide review we found the formation service most useful for first-time founders who want registration and banking set up together. Full Tide company formation guide.
Tide review: customer support
Tide's support is mainly in-app chat. Tide reviews on Trustpilot praise individual agents and quick set-up, while the most common complaints are slow replies and difficulty reaching a person. If uninterrupted access to your money matters, consider keeping a second business account as a backup, which is sensible with any app-only provider.

Tide review: alternatives to consider
This Tide review isn't saying the Tide business account suits everyone. Depending on what matters most to you:
- Lots of transfers on a free plan: compare the transfer allowances on other free accounts in our business bank account comparison.
- Every account a full bank: some providers hold your money directly as a bank. Check the protection line for each account before you choose.
- Business credit card: if what you need is a credit line rather than a current account, look at a business credit card alongside your account.
